Box Mods and Sub Ohm Tanks Slowly Replacing Mech Mods and RDAs

Posted by Dex L on

If e-cig users have been following the vaping trend, they would notice how box mods and sub ohm tanks are on the rise while mechanical mods and RDAs are a falling trend. There are still new RDAs and mech mods coming out but the trend is not quite popular as it was a year ago, while new box mods and sub ohm tanks are being released every month. The reason behind this is because of the advancing technology of e-cigs allowing vapers with more control of vapor production with no rebuilding required and consistent power when using a regulated box mod. It is making sub ohm vaping less time consuming and easier with more safety.

Box mods are e-cig devices that power up the atomizers. Some require external batteries (Kangertech KBOX 40W) while other comes with internal batteries (Eleaf iStick 30W). Most box mods are regulated devices with a circuit board allowing vapers to adjust the wattage, voltage, or temperature, and usually include an LED screen displaying battery life, current wattage and voltage, and the resistance of the atomizer. With mechanical mods, there is power loss when the battery drains which can be very annoying after a long day of usage while box mods have no power drop until the battery is about to die. Regulated box mods typically have protection to prevent the device from exploding with short circuit protection, low resistance protection, and reverse cell protection, which is safer to use than a mechanical mod. The circuit board controls the power of the device to ensure vapers get stable power throughout the battery life while mechanical mod depends on a full battery charge to obtain this power.

The advantage of a mechanical mod is the design is much simpler and failure is likely due to the battery instead of the mod itself. Mechanical mod typically is made from all stainless steel or brass with moving parts without any electronic, which would be more durable. The appearance of a mech mod is much more elegant than a box mod and there are hundreds of different types of mechanical mods available out in the market. Mechanical mods are much easier to use by just popping in the battery and firing away since they are not electronics to deal with.

Sub ohm tanks are becoming more common in the market while RDAs are slowly falling out because of sub ohm tanks having the ability to produce vapors like dripping atomizers. Sub ohm tanks do not require much vaping knowledge while allowing users to experience sub ohm vaping. The issues are that RDA can be a hassle for vapers from having to rebuild the coils to having to drip e-liquid after a few hits. The sub ohm tanks like the Aspire Atlantis and Kanger Subtank Mini allows users to vape like an RDA without having to rebuild the coils and dripping after a few puffs, which will save a lot of time and energy. The coils come pre-built by the manufacturer and it is quick to install unlike having to rebuild the coils. Tank like the Subtank has rebuilding capabilities instead of using the pre-built atomizer head. New sub ohm tanks are coming with Japanese organic cotton just like the cotton used with rebuildable dripping atomizers. Sub ohm tanks also come with large air holes for bigger vapors and most allows users to adjust the air hole size.

RDA will still be popular because it allows vapers to customize their atomizer to a certain resistance and built. With a custom built, users can obtain a certain type of hit. Rebuilding coils is a hobby to some so it will still be popular. Instead of having to use the same e-liquid until the tanks run out of juice, RDAs allows users to easily switch juice by dripping different juices on. When using a fixed voltage mechanical mod with a rebuildable atomizer, custom coil set up allows the amount of power the battery can deliver by the resistance of the atomizer using Ohm’s Law.

Sub ohm vaping is the hottest trend in the e-cig world right now. New technology is making sub ohm vaping easier than ever. A year ago, sub ohm was usually achieved through rebuildable tanks and unregulated mechanical mods. Coils had to be built by the user. Rebuildable tanks were nothing similar to achieving huge clouds as dripping atomizers. Now, with the new technology of regulated box mods and sub ohm tanks, it is allowing vapers an easier and faster way to vape without any vaping experience require. It would not require much work. Plus it is much safer using a regulated mod compared to an unregulated mod if the user does not know Ohm’s Law. The manufacturer is doing much of the work of testing and building the product in order for vapers to achieve sub ohm vaping. Users do not have to worry about building the coils a certain resistance in order to obtain a certain power output with now regulated mod doing the work for that.

Mech mods and rebuildable tanks will still be popular in the e-cig market because of their beautiful metal design and allow users to customize the way its vapes. It can achieve better vapor production with bigger clouds when rebuilding yourself. But as more people try box mods and sub ohm tanks, they will realize that these involve less work to maintain while still obtaining the same sub ohm vaping or even better with variable wattage. With the growing e-cig technology, vapers don’t know what to expect in the upcoming months and years, but it has surely made vaping a better experience.
